About Me

I am a secondary school teacher with over 28 years’ experience. I am also an elected trade union official and have been since 2012. I am the local secretary of Bridgend NASUWT. A position I have proudly held for nearly 10 years, during which time we have seen our membership double. I am also one of the National Executive Members for District 31 which means I am also elected to represent teachers in Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan. As part of my trade union role I sit on the NASUWT’s Training Committee and I also train teachers as a qualified NASUWT Tutor. Through my work representing teachers I am aware that over a third of education professionals experience poor mental health at some point in their career and of the desperate need to address this crisis for the benefit of us all. Teacher mental health issues not only have a detrimental influence on teachers and their families but also directly affect classroom outcomes and at a time our profession is in a recruitment crisis this is a huge concern. Therefore I am a champion of positive mental health and well-being for both adults and children and this is why I decided to train as a mental health first aid tutor.
